Ingeniously intertwining the lives of a number of characters from all walks of life, Ghosh paints a picture of life in India during the 1800s when opium provides a living for many. Descriptive passages bring this long lost period of opium trading and colonialism to life. Cleverly drawn characters develop as the novel does, and much thought is given to details, such as the oddly patterned speech of Serang Ali, and the new attire, befitting his new found status, of Zachary.Sea of Poppies provides not only an intriguing story with plenty of action and adventures, as well as moments of sentiment and humour but also a real insight into history. Ghosh’s in depth knowledge, use of language and style of writing means the novel is in tune with both its setting and the era. Now all that remains is to wait for the next instalment."},

The title neatly encapsulates the threads that bind the characters to each other; the sea journey they eventually embark on and their involvement in the growth and manufacture of poppies for the expanding opium trade. The cast of characters range from the lowest to the highest of castes and include indigenous, Eastern, American and European peoples. I found myself drawn to two of the characters from the lowest castes, Deeti and Kalua.Unfortunately, I found the mostly incomprehensible, nautical and Anglo-Indian terms both irritating and contrived. I appreciate every epoch and place has its own slang or vernacular, but I don’t believe characters would speak entirely in it. Why not provide a glossary? A page turner of a book with an ending that clearly cries out for a sequel !"},
{"latitude": "20.593684", "longitude": "78.96288", "title" : "Reader Diane Hassal writes: ", "content" : "Sea of Poppies is an epic, slow burn of a book. It slowly introduces its motley crew of complex, flawed but fascinating characters and the landscape they inhabit is as lush and fecund as the fields of poppies Ghosh shows us. It is a land of opium workers and opium addicts, deposed rajas, religious zealots and profiteers. The historical background encompasses British involvement in the opium trade, and its resultant damage to the Indian economy, showing how Indian farmers were forced to grow this crop alone, leading to misery and starvation. I have to say I loved this book and am very glad it’s the first part of a trilogy because by the end I was desperate for the next part. The last hundred pages were so thrilling that I sat gripping the covers and cheering on my favourite characters as the mutinous crew fought both the brutal first mate and the turbulent sea. The characters are just as diverse as the British Empire itself, each with their own dialects and idiosyncracies, all brought together by the opium trade's many tentacled hands into the Ibis, on a voyage that will irrevocably changed them forever. The author has obviously done a massive amount of research into the period, and this novel is so rich with details that it could veritably serve as an encyclopaedia of early 19th century Indian life, both at sea and on land. However, this was never allowed to stifle the narrative, which deftly moves between a half-dozen main characters and different settings with ease. The novel is as chock-full of exciting incidents as a door-stopper 19th century adventure yarn, without abandoning a realism which makes it a compelling page-turner. The humorous episodes, largely supplied by the Falstaffian figure of Baboo Nob Kissin, enlivens the story between accounts of opium addiction, imprisonment and various corporal punishments. Ghosh's experiment with Anglo-Indian dialects adds tremendously to the authenticity of the voices of the characters, although sometimes it could be rather distracting, especially in the earlier part of the story. There is a glossary ('The Chrestomaty') appended to the end of the book, which is quite useful to decipher the various lingos, but regretfully, not all of the words used is included. Obviously, it would be more helpful if all the words are included so that readers wouldn't miss any bit of dialogue. Probably Ghosh's best and most impressive work to date. As this is said to be the first part of a projected trilogy, I'll be waiting with bated breath for the next installment. Write quickly , Mr. Ghosh! "},

{"latitude": "21.913965", "longitude": "95.956223", "title" : "Reader Carolin Gilbaya writes: ", "content" : "A Trip to the 'Netherworld'Amitav Gosh's dense narrative enriches the already diverse genre of travel literature, for 'Sea of Poppies' is both - a colourful example of a highly readable travelogue - and a well-researched historical novel. In the episodic scenes of the narrative Gosh designs a vivid fictional personnel. Even his stock characters have an individual twist to them. Thus, in the course of the narrative the reader meets Deeti, the farm-worker who is widowed and has to abandon her only daughter to prevent herself from the traditional widow-burning, Neel, the former raja's son who experiences the tragic fall of the great, Paulette and Zachary who both desperately try to strive for a new identity. All of them are closely connected by the effects and outcomes of the opium trade, be they consumers, or producers,or only seemingly indirectly involved. Conjoined as the pedals of the poppies these characters and their fates are inevitably linked. Their individual as well as common aim is to escape their current living conditions. Hence, in the final part of the novel that leads the reader from 'land' over 'river' to 'the sea' all of the main characters are aboard the 'white winged bird', the 'Ibis', and take the audience with them on a trip to a distant netherworld, to the 'Black Sea'. The outcome of this journey remains - as the first part of the trilogy - open. The picture of the netherworld that Gosh seems to paint here corroborates Bhabha's notion of the 'third space'. All the different ranks and ethnicities meet on the waters of the 'Black Sea' where they become shipbrothers and -sisters. Here old rules cease to exist and new laws are created. Thus, apart from the level of plot, 'Sea of Poppies' is an interesting read, for its manifold generic facets provide the reader with an illuminating history lesson. Set on the brink of the 'Opium Wars' in 1838, the novel gives insights into the trade relations, the forms of producing the drug, and the 'casting' of indentured labourers. Since this tangible(hi)story is moreover clad into presumably authentic vernacular, the reader can only look forward to setting sail with the two remaining sequals.Carolin Gilbaya, Trier University."},

Infact I thought one word was going to be missing until it turned up half way through and that was 'dhobi'. We we would never wash our clothes but dhobi them and if we did not rinse our underwear out sufficiently we could finish up with a dhobi rash. In my early years I served with Chinese crews and even our bosun was known as the 'Kassab' which I am sure is linked to the Kussab mentioned. Just one term I have issue with on page 125 is when refering to a ship under weigh. A ship will weigh anchor and when it is off the bottom it is aweigh but when a ship is not made fast, at anchor, or aground it is 'Under way' A minor point in an otherwise perfectly authentic maritime story.
